Final exhibition pieces… This is my space for the end of year show.

Creating a make shift outfit using tissue paper i stuck more icicle objects down the dress. Adding silver leaf to the side of the face to add more detail to the blackness.

It was the first time I’ve used silver leaf and alongside the fragility of it, it proves to be worth the fiddling around with it! After such success from these 2 photo shoots i was thinking of what i could possibly do next!? Sticking with the alter ego pathway i did a bit of rearranging and rethinking, the first Ice Maiden i created came clear that she intact was the Maiden at the end of the story as she had gotten old, this black Maiden acts as the evil woman who killed the boy Rudy and acts possessive over him, so finally that leaves one more to do right? Yes, i will be creating another character which will be a much more glamorous approach to the Ice Maiden emphasising her lips as she kissed Rudy to save his life.

So after the outcome of the first Ice Maiden it came clear that they weren’t as strong images as i hoped for. So after reviewing the story line again it had came to me that i could look at the fact that the ice maiden has an alter ego!!! One moment she was caring in the way that she didn’t want Rudy to die and the other one is the evil possessive side to her. So with this i created an evil Ice Maiden, doing it all again but opposites!

The Ice Maiden

Ok so maybe i should of told you the story of ‘The Ice Maiden’ so here you go you can read it for yourselves…

It tells the story of Rudy, who we first meet as a little boy selling toy houses his grandfather makes. We learn that both his parents are dead, his mother killed when she fell into a glacial crevice. She had been holding the infant Rudy at the time but he was saved. This was the first “kiss” by the ice maiden who is determined to possess him.

Rudy eventually goes to live with uncle and becomes an exceptional hunter and marksman. He falls in love with the miller’s daughter, a girl who is definitely above him in society, but he eventually wins her hand through his courage and skill. Remember though, that the Ice Maiden has been watching him all this time, trying on several occasions to make him hers. Eventually she succeeds and Rudy drowns on the night before his wedding.

This could possibly be one of my favourite images from  the shoot because it gave me a whole new look onto the project! The character looks old and as the paint as dried it has tightened the skin so when she blew glitter from her hands it looks as though wrinkles appeared creating an old woman look.

Yes i painted the model white!! Eeek! It was very uncomfortable for her but we powered throughout it creating some brilliant images! The more the paint cracked the more delicate the model became creating a whole new character of ‘The Ice Maiden’.

The model getting a little to comfortable for my liking before the shoot begins…!! I had set up a simple area in the studio consisting of different coloured silks on the floor to create an ice/water illusion. With one simple light on the right hand side to shine a natural light on to her and on the left hand side was another light on the floor with a blue filter. The reason it was so low to the floor was because originally i wanted photos of the model laid on the floor but this turned disasterous when she looked like she was laid on the floor dead.

What is this? Well… this has been one of my most recent pieces of work! i have been exploring into old european folk tales urging to recreate one! I narrowed hundreds down to one… ‘The Ice Maiden’ by Hans Christian Anderson. After reading the story over and over again determined to create this character in my mind i finally imagined an image of what she would look like. I spent ages creating these icicle looking objects to originally create just a necklace, but the glitter became addictive and i just wanted to carry it on and so i did the outcome having made a piece to cover the chest area and below!!

Touch Upss!!!!!

And again another piece created for my portfolio for my university interviews, this was based around a 1950’s / 1960’s era, where i recreated a typical kitchen housewife. The image looks quite kitsch this was the aim of the photoshoot. I had shopped around in some charity shops to put together the outfit and then did a lot of research into make up and hair designs in that era, and this is my outcome. I had researched into Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn because from knowledge i know they were very known in that era too.

The purpose of these 2 photos were for my portfolio, it was a simple and quick planned fashion styling shoot where the model was wearing wacky clothing. I really like the 2 head shots as a piece as i find that they link together well despite the fact of being different poses.

Still continuing with the idea of patterns i created this piece. By using a white face paint as the base of the face i had created a stencil by hand consisting of triangular shapes of different sizes. I simply pressed the stencil on to the face and using a makeup brush i dabbed a black eyeshadow onto the stencil till the area was fully covered. I had also enhanced the eyebrows using a very dark eyebrow liner and used a dark pink lipstick to add colour. There was also crystals placed underneath the bottom eyelashes but this isn’t as visible as the model is looking down.

Photo shoot continued from the leopard print shoot, still staying on the lines of creating patterns, but by pouring paint freely down one side of the face. I really like negative space on the 2nd picture because it allows the eye to focus on the object without being distracted.

This was the first full makeup photo shoot I have ever done, it was continued on from a previous assignment i did which involved looking at different cultures using textiles. From experimenting with different patterns I decided to change the way of presenting these patterns other than on fabric, this was done by using the face as the canvas.
